Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Interested in a Cord Taco?

cord-taco

Most cord organizers I’ve seen are made of Velcro or plastic or even fabric, but very few of them are made of leather.  The Cord Taco 5-Pack from the This is Ground shop on Etsy has five leather cord organizers for the price of a single leather organizer from some companies.  Each Taco is a circular piece of leather that folds around your cords, cables, or earbuds and locks closed with a metallic button (black or gold, depending on leather color) to keep everything organized.  You’ll set a set of black or tan (or mixed) Tacos for $25.99.

7 Questions to Ask Yourself to Bring Clarity to Your Blogging

Do you feel like you’ve lost clarity around what it is that you’re trying to do with your blog?

I’ve recently bumped into a few bloggers grappling with this idea. Some were new,  even ‘Pre’ Bloggers, while a couple had been blogging for a while but had lost some direction.

Out of these conversations, I put together a set of questions to help them think it through.

The questions revolve around asking:

What are YOU About?YOU

While I won’t guarantee you instant clarity on answering these questions I hope that putting a little time aside to work through them might help – please let me know if they do!

  1. What interests do you have?
  2. What experiences (good and bad) have you had?
  3. What expertise and skills do you have?
  4. What are your passions?
  5. What gives you energy?
  6. What do you talk a lot about to friends?
  7. If you could write about anything – what would it be?

Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google Blogger Mosaic Dynamic View
Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy 'Dynamic Views'. There's a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails -- click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views -- and really, why weren't they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive -- which we're sure it will be -- these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You'll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.

Objection! Phoenix Wright Trilogy now available for iOS

Time to dust off your best suit and head for the courtroom, as the Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright Trilogy has arrived for iOS. Available to download now from the App Store for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, this single app contains three of the classic courtroom battle titles from Capcom; Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations.

Originally released for the Game Boy Advance, and then later the Nintendo DS, Ace Attorney sees you assume the role of the lead character, Phoenix Wright, a defense attorney. From there on out you take on a multitude of cases, presenting your evidence, cross-examining witnesses, and shouting "objection!" a lot. It's a lot a fun to play. You can play it in landscape mode for better visuals, or in vertical mode for more efficient gameplay.

The app is a free download, and for that you get to play out the first two cases. After that, you can either buy each of the three titles one at a time, or as a bundle. The bundle for all three will cost you $16.99, with individual episodes priced at either $5.99 or $6.99. Having played this on the Nintendo DS in the past, I'm really happy to see this come to iOS, and already I've shouted "Objection!" too many times today! How about you guys?

'Comment Crew' Back in Action Against US Cybertargets, Says Mandiant

China and Iran were accused last week of renewing their cyberattacks on U.S. computer systems after a brief hiatus. A gang of Chinese hackers allegedly affiliated with the country's People's Liberation Army has resumed infiltrating U.S. computer systems after making a strategic withdrawal earlier this year, according to cybersecurity firm Mandiant. Mandiant blew the whistle on the Chinese bandits known as Unit 61398, or the "Comment Crew," in a special report released in February.

How to Improve Your Website Search Ranking with Long-Tail Keywords

The Web is so massive that individuals just making their presence on the Internet may have a troublesome time getting noticed since the established, big sites have already captured the large segments of the market.

Likewise, sites with age (perhaps yours) will see its ups and downs as new competitors and existing giants clamor for the hot keywords within your respective industry. Effectively obtaining these high search rankings, for major keywords, can have a profound impact on your online earnings but since the competition is ever-growing you will need to shift mindset from the “main” keywords to those that would come under the label of the “long-tail”.

What is the long-tail keyword?

The long-tail is really just about finding the real keywords individuals use to find specific information.

An individual may start with a broad keyword but then make their way to the specific (long-tail) because it will (hopefully) display a greater focus of information whether it’s products, services, or informational resources.

For example:

  • Short: Bicycles
  • Medium: Mountain Bikes
  • Long: Best Mountain Bikes for Northeast United States

In essence, you have to think as a person on the other end of the screen that’s doing online research to find specific information and match their query.

Read our guide: Research & Understanding the Long-Tail Keyword.

Improving Traffic with the Long-Tail

After reading our guide and gaining an understanding of the process of finding long-tail keywords it’s time to put them into (profitable) action.

There are dozens of ways to utilize the long-tail but here are five that we’d recommend to get started:

  • Highly Specific Reviews – Consider going after each and every product within your niche and giving them a review. Go on to Amazon.com and search for the top qualifiers and then apply the specific brand, category, and name to your reviews to ensure you cover every element of your keyword usage. Likewise, use industry terms to describe the various elements rather than using generic, conversational words that don’t apply to the product.
  • Regional Roundups – As per example, consider doing ‘regional’ style roundups and lists. You could create these lists based on the weather, terrain, local events, lifestyle, and more. Soon enough you will have dozens of posts that apply to all areas of the world while working the long-tail angle of keywords.
  • Local Authority – Operating a local website will give you the benefit of doing coverage of local events and news. Take advantage of the little coverage your town may have in larger publications by becoming the source of local information.
  • Event Coverage – You’ve probably seen many conferences through live blogging – go the extra mile and make pieces of content related to the attendees, products, services, and resources you hear and see mentioned at the events. Not every bit of coverage will gain a whole lot of attention but the collective long-tail search will certainly give you a healthy boost in traffic.
  • Personal Highlights – The media is very obsessed with celebrities and stars but what if you turned the tables and highlighted the little guy? You’d be amazed at how grateful and active an individual will be if you talk about them because they’re most likely not used to coverage; you could use this to highlight business individuals within your market, get a boost to your traffic, play nice with competitors, and ultimately create a resource for consumers to find the good people behind their products (which you share through an affiliate link).

Obviously you can take any content ideas and pair them with long-tail keywords; doing so will help you rank for terms all across the board rather than just a few specific, highly-competitive, volatile keywords within your niche – - which allows you to create long-term search growth.

Will you capture the long-tail market for your niche?

Physicists Just Created the World's Most Precise Clock—Ever

Physicists Just Created the World's Most Precise Clock—Ever

We know that the universe is roughly 13.8 billion years old—give or take a few hundred million years. Which seems like a decently accurate reading. But a new pair of clocks, which can measure time at a 1018 fractional level, makes our own measurements look like child's play. To have the same level of precision as these twin timepieces, we'd have to be able to specify the age of the known universe to within less than one second.
